A decade and a half ago a courageous woman, Susette Kelo, waged a desperate battle to save her neighborhood from a city’s effort to condemn the neighborhood’s homes and business and to hand those properties over to a private developer. Susette’s little pink house became the focal point of one of the most important property rights battles in American history. Now a new movie, Little Pink House, starring Catherine Keener and Jeanne Tripplehorn, dramatizes her story.
Although the film has been getting good reviews on RottenTomatoes.com, the movie has only been given a limited release. The Freedom Center of Missouri is cooperating with Tugg.com to make sure that folks all over the state of Missouri have the opportunity to see it. And, in addition to the movie, we want to offer our supporters a glimpse of what took place behind the scenes of this battle against eminent domain abuse.
Dave Roland, the Freedom Center’s director of litigation, was part of the litigation team at the Institute for Justice when the U.S. Supreme Court was considering Kelo v. New London, and IJ hired Jenifer Zeigler Roland, our executive director, to help coordinate the nationwide effort to reform eminent domain laws in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision. Following each special screening of Little Pink House Dave and Jenifer will answer the audience’s questions about the case and the ongoing legal campaign to secure constitutional protections for citizens’ property rights.
