Throughout most of American history, it was almost taken for granted that citizens had a constitutionally-protected right to earn a living by applying their skills in a useful business that presents no threat to the public health, safety, or welfare. Unfortunately, both courts and legislatures have lost sight of this fundamental right, allowing for the creation of laws that prohibit ordinary citizens from earning a living unless they first get permission from government agencies which, in many cases, are run by the very people who would be the newcomers’ business competition. The Freedom Center of Missouri is fighting in the courts of law and the court of public opinion to protect Missourians’ right to earn a living in harmless professions.
